COMMUNICATION
SKILLS TRASLATION?
Kavaliauskienė G. (2009) says that
translation does not help students to develop communication skills. Translation
activities may be suitable for students who prefer analytical or
verbal-linguistic learning strategies. I say that Communication skills are
known as writing, reading, speaking and listening. We have been developing
these skills since we were young, starting with writing, the most basic is the
alphabet, words like colors, animals and other subjects, with this skill we
practice the translation, it also happens with speaking we relate it with
writing and to be able to speaking and listening we must know the grammar or
writing and reading; then we can say that everything is related. The
proficiency in different language skills is of utmost importance to students at
tertiary level.
According to Duff (1989), for the
last two decades teachers and students have started to use translation to teach
/ learn English language (Duff, 1989). Some ideas for classroom approaches and
activities are suggested in the online source quoted above. Translation is
sometimes referred to as the fifth language skill alongside the other four
basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing: Translation holds a special
importance at an intermediate and advanced level: in the advanced or final
stage of language teaching, translation from L1 to L2 and from L2 to L1 is
recognized as the fifth skill and the most important social skill since it
promotes communication and understanding between strangers (Ross, 2000). If
students are aware of the differences, language interference, or transfer, and
intervention from their own language are likely to be reduced.
Translation activities may be
suitable for students who prefer analytical or verbal-linguistic learning
strategies, it is already the abilities and strengths that the student has to
be able to lean to this subject of analytical or verbal learning, but
translational is fundamental to help each skill communicative in the advanced
or final stage of language teaching.
Finally it
is important to clarify the methods and techniques that are used for the
subject of translation because it is a methodology that influences the learning
process of the student and you can observe the weaknesses and strengths in each
of the communication skills that the student has.
